Documentary filmmaker Billy Corben called in this morning to talk with the guys about his new film for ESPN. After joking a bit about the title of the show, like many new guests do, Free Beer and Corben got into the details of "Broke," the latest entry into ESPN's 30 for 30 series. The film covers how some athletes have gone from multimillionaire stars to broke and desperate.

"There's only so many players on a given team that's making superstar salaries," said Corben. "A lot of these guys, for the very first time when they get their paycheck, that's when they learn about taxes. They don't even know about it."

After relating a story about how Bart Scott cashed his first NFL paycheck at a check-cashing store, Zane was prompted to say, "A lot of these guys are stupid."

"I don't care what anybody says, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard," said Zane.

"Well, there's a difference between stupid and ignorant," said Corben, before going on to point out that a lot of professional athletes, and college graduates for that matter, are financially illiterate.

In case you missed it, the full interview is online now over at Free Beer and Hot Wings.
