The Census Bureau reported Tuesday the US poverty rate has risen to 15.1 percent, the highest it's been since 1993.

That translates to about 46 million Americans currently living in poverty, an increase of more than two million since 2009. The new figures mark the fourth consecutive year the poverty rate has increased.

In 2010, the poverty line was set at an income of $22,314 for a family of four.

The Census Bureau also reported 16.3 percent of Americans have no health insurance, which matches the number seen in 2009.

Ron Haskins, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, said, "Income down, poverty up, health insurance coverage down or flat. The news on economic well-being in the U.S. is not good."
