Should Soda and Other Sugary Drinks Be Taxed? — Survey of the Day
Much like cigarettes and alcohol are taxed, there is a movement afoot to levy similar charges on soda and other sweetened beverages.
As it stands, 33 states have some form of sales tax that is added to soda and other sugar-based drinks. And more and more places are trying to jump on the "soda tax" train, including New York City, which recently proposed a one cent per ounce tax on sugary beverages.
So how does the public feel about soda taxes? According to a new survey from Harris Interactive of 2,221 adults, 62 percent oppose the tax, with 37 percent strongly opposing it. Of the 24 percent who say they support it, only seven percent do so "strongly."
