Novak Djokovic Defeats Rafael Nadal To Win Wimbledon Title
By reaching the Wimbledon final, Serbia's Novak Djokovic clinched the number one spot in the world rankings. By defeating former number one Rafael Nadal 6-4 6-1 1-6 6-3, he left little doubt that he is currently the best tennis player on the planet.
Djokovic had won an amazing 49 of his last 50 matches coming into the final, and had defeated Nadal four times in finals this year. He had never, however, beaten the Spaniard in a Grand Slam final.
Djokovic, 24, rolled in the first two sets Sunday, before being blown out by Nadal in the third set. Nadal's momentum proved fleeting, and Djokovic was able to break Nadal twice in the fourth set on his way to capturing his third Grand Slam title.
Nadal, the defending Wimbledon champion, sits on 10 Grand Slam victories.
