E! News correspondent Giuliana Rancic announced her battle with breast cancer back in October, and now she's going in for a double mastectomy sometime next week.

Rancic told the Today show on Monday that she went public with the decision for several reasons, including a desire to help erase the stigma associated with the surgery. "[It's] come a long way from 20 years ago," she told the Today show. "The results can be incredible. Not only can it save your life, but you can come out feeling healthier and with a positive self-image."

She also thanked everyone for their support after her initial diagnosis, and encouraged other women "to be proactive with their health and get checked out."

About the procedure itself, she said, "I'll have scars, but I like scars. Scars are beautiful because they tell a story. I'll be able to say that I survived something major and it's made me stronger. I will be a better woman for it."

Rancic's husband Bill, who appeared with her during the Today show interview, added, "2012 is our year. We're going to ring in the New Year happy and healthy."
