Shocking Death of Teen Hockey Player from Shot Spawns Safety Debate [VIDEO]

Sixteen-year-old Canadian hockey player Kyle Fundytus died after taking a puck to the throat while blocking a shot during a game. Because of the incident, a risk and safety management committee will meet next month to reconsider the rules on blocking shots, among other concerns. Fundytus was wearing a neck protector at the time of the accident.

“I can assure you it will be there,” Glen McCurdie, Hockey Canada’s vice president of member services, said. “We will take an incident such as this and see what can be done.”

Although these kinds of deadly incidents are rare in the sport, it has raised questions about whether coaches can do more to protect kids from injury and possibly death.
