Oklahoma Tops AP Football Poll for Record 100th Time
Oklahoma on Sunday became the first team ever to be ranked #1 in the AP football poll 100 times.
The Sooners were ranked #1 for the first time in 1954, the second year of Oklahoma’s NCAA-record 47-game winning streak, which lasted from 1953-1957. They have spent at least one week in the top spot in 19 different seasons. This season is the 11th time the Sooners have held the top spot in the preseason poll. In those other 10 years, Oklahoma won five national championships (1955, 1956, 1974, 1975 and 1985) and only once finished the season ranked lower than 4th (#7 in 1977).
Only three other schools have topped the AP poll 90 or more times -- Notre Dame (95), Ohio State (94) and Southern Cal (90).
The Sooners will put their #1 ranking on the line this weekend with a game at #5 Florida State.
