According to media outlets, Libyan officials are announcing the death of former Libyan dictator Muammar Gadhafi by wounds suffered when an eight-month-old revolution effort overran his hometown of Sirte.

"There was a lot of firing against his group and he died," Abdel Majid Mlegta, a National Transitional Council official, told Reuters.

Mlegta also said that Gadhafi, 69, suffered leg wounds earlier when he attempted to flee the attack at dawn on Thursday. He was promptly captured and transferred to a convoy, which was then reportedly blasted by rebel warplanes.

Gadhafi is wanted by the International Crime Court on charges of ordering civilian killings, and his death allows for revolutionaries to begin a new democratic body. Despite these reports, however, no announcements have been made by senior officials, although photos and statements have been circulating online.

"Our people in Sirte saw the body," Information Minister Mahmoud Shammam told the Associated Press. "Mustafa Abdul-Jalil [Chairman of the rebel forces] will confirm it soon."

NOTE: Death still unconfirmed
