Former ‘Growing Pains’ Star Kirk Cameron Under Fire for Calling Homosexuality ‘Unnatural’ [VIDEO]
Actor Kirk Cameron, who starred on the 1980s sitcom 'Growing Pains,' is experiencing some public relations pain of his own after telling CNN's Piers Morgan that homosexuality is "unnatural."
The devout born-again Christian went on Morgan's show Friday to discuss social issues, and when Morgan asked for his thoughts on whether homosexuality is a sin, Cameron replied, "I think that it's unnatural. I think that it's detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization."
The CNN host then asked the father of six how accepting he'd be if one of his own children were gay. "I wouldn't say, 'That's great, son, as long as you're happy,'" Cameron replied. "I'm going to say, 'There are all sorts of issues we need to wrestle through in our life. Just because you feel one way doesn't mean we should act on everything we feel.'"
His remarks sparked a furor among progressives and gay groups, and while Morgan publicly said the actor's views may be "antiquated" but he was "brave" for expressing them, Herndon Graddick, the Senior Director of Programs at the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) issued a statement reading in part:
Cameron is out of step with a growing majority of Americans, particularly people of faith who believe that their gay and lesbian brothers and sisters should be loved and accepted based on their character and not condemned because of their sexual orientation."
