Now that summer is officially here, the time has come to start getting serious about where you plan to take that family vacation.

However, just as important as determining your ultimate destination comes the decision about which hotel you should consider booking?

A recent survey conducted by Consumer Reports asked more than 22,000 people to evaluate 44 of the most popular hotel chains in America.

According to the survey, Ritz Carlton is the favorite among luxury hotels, while Microtel Inn and Suites received the highest possible ranking for those people travelling on a budget.

“No one would ever confuse Microtel Inn & Suites for the Ritz, but each does a great job of pleasing its particular customers,” said Tod Marks, senior editor, Consumer Reports. “Satisfaction depends on what you’re seeking. And our survey clearly shows that across all price points, there are superb hotel choices to fit any guest’s needs.”

Participants in the survey also rated the worst hotel chains in the country, with Econo Lodge and Americas Best Value claiming their spot in the ranks with low scores across the board in overall value, upkeep, comfort and service.

Overall, participants feel that hotels have made definite improvements over the last five years. The latest survey shows that 53 percent of all hotel guests are exceptionally pleased with their check-in and checkout process. That is up from 42 percent since 2006.
