British pop singer Amy Winehouse, who died on July 23 at the age of 27, was reportedly planning to adopt a young girl from St. Lucia in the Carribbean.

Winehouse made several trips to the island over the past couple of years, and in 2009 met 10-year-old Dannika Augustine and her grandmother, Marjorie Lambert, who runs a beach bar Amy frequented.

“Amy loved Dannika with all her heart,” Lambert said. “They would spend all day playing, horse-riding and walking up and down the beach hand-in-hand. Amy used to beg me: ‘I want to adopt Dannika. I want to take her to England.’ She was prepared to move to St Lucia to be her full-time mum. If she had not died, there is no doubt she would be here in St Lucia completing the adoption process.”

Lambert also said Winehouse had hired attorneys and was planning a visit to St. Lucia next week. Danikka’s poverty-stricken parents had both agreed to the adoption so that their daughter could have a better life.

“Amy was already my mother,” Danikka said. “I would call her mum and she would call me her daughter. She took care of me and we had fun together. I loved her and she loved me. She was the most amazing person and I was looking forward to living with her here or in London. I cannot believe she is gone. This is the worst thing that ever happened to me.”
