In order to handle a predicted 9.8 percent increase in shipments this year, United Parcel Service announced that it will hire an additional 55,000 workers in the United States this holiday season.

Shipments are growing due to an overall rise in holiday shopping this year, according to company sources, and analysts say that is right on par with their predictions, as many are forecasting online-shopping increases upwards of 17 percent.

However, on a national level, organizations like the National Retail Federation and Wells Fargo only predict holiday shopping to increase around 4 percent this year.

Still, UPS plans to put more feet on the street in order to handle busy times like their peak day, December 20, when the company expects to deliver some 28 million packages—almost twice their daily average.
