A bake sale being held by the Republican student group at the University of California, Berkeley is garnering nationwide attention.

Why? Because the advertised prices show men pay more than women, and whites pay more than Asians, Latinos, African-Americans, and Native Americans.

Members of the Berkeley College Republicans say the sale is designed to draw attention to pending legislation that would permit California universities to consider race, gender, ethnicity and national origin during the admissions process.

BCR President Shawn Lewis says, "We agree that the event is inherently racist, but that is the point. It is no more racist than giving an individual an advantage in college admissions based solely on their race (or) gender."

But Vishalli Loomba, president of the Associated Students of the University of California, says the tactic is making students uncomfortable.

"I think student members of BCR have a full right to express their feelings," she adds, "but I don't necessarily think this ... is constructive. I strongly encourage them to engage in this dialogue in a more constructive manner, such as a forum or a town hall meeting."
