1846 — The first organized baseball game is played under Alexander Cartwright’s rules on Hoboken, New Jersey’s Elysian Fields. The New York Baseball Club defeated the Knickerbockers, 23-1. (More info.)

1867 —  Gilbert Patrick rode Ruthless to victory in the first-ever Belmont Stakes. (More info.)

1936 — German boxer Max Schmeling knocked out Joe Louis at Yankee Stadium. (More info.)

1938 — Italy beat Hungary, 4-2, in soccer’s third World Cup at Paris. (More info.)

1942 — Boston Braves outfielder Paul Waner became the seventh major league player to get 3,000 hits in a career. (More info.)

1943 — The NFL approved the merger of the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers — they became the Steagles — for the 1943 season due to a shortage of players during World War II. The merger dissolved after the season. (More info.)

1946 — Joe Louis knocked out Billy Conn at Yankee Stadium in a rematch of their 1941 fight. (More info.)

1952 — Brooklyn Dodgers’ pitcher Carl Erskine no-hit the Chicago Cubs, 5-0. (More info.)

1974 — Kansas City Royals’ pitcher Steve Busby threw his second career no-hitter to beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 2-0. (More info.)

1986 — Argentina beat West Germany, 3-2, in soccer’s 13th World Cup in Mexico City. (More info.)

1992 — Evander Holyfield beat Larry Holmes in 12 rounds in Las Vegas to retain the heavyweight boxing title. (More info.)

1999 — The Dallas Stars beat the Buffalo Sabres, 2-1, in the third overtime of Game 6 to win their first Stanley Cup title. (More info.)
