1909 — Jim Thorpe made his pro baseball debut by pitching for a minor league team in Rocky Mount, N.C. The appearance will later cause him to be stripped of the medals he will win at the 1912 Summer Olympics. They were restored in 1983. (More info.)

1938 — St. Louis Browns’ pitchers walked Boston Red Sox slugger Jimmy Foxx six consecutive times. (More info.)

1951— Ben Hogan won his second straight U.S. Golf Open. (More info.)

1957 — Chicago White Sox reliever Dixie Howell hits two home runs in 8-6 win over Washington Senators. (More info.)

1968 — Lee Trevino won the U.S. Golf Open at Oak Hill County Club in New York. He was the first golfer to shoot all four rounds of an Open under par. (More info.)

1978 — Cincinnati Reds’ pitcher Tom Seaver pitched his first career no-hitter, 4-0,  against the St.Louis Cardinals. (More info.)

1984 — Hurdler Edwin Moses won his 100th consecutive 400-meter race. (More info.)

1985 — American Willie Banks set the triple jump record (58 feet 11 inches) in Indianapolis. (More info.)

1991 — Minnesota Twins won their team-record 15th game in a row. (More info.)

1992 — Boston Red Sox pitcher Jeff Reardon set a new all-time record with his 342nd save. (More info.)

1995 — Salt Lake City was awarded the XIX Winter Olympics in 2002. (More info.)

1996 — The Chicago Bulls beat the Seattle Supersonics in Game 6 to win the NBA championship. (More info.)

1998 — The Detroit Red Wings finished off a sweep of the Washington Capitals to win the Stanley Cup. Coach Scotty Bowman tied Toe Blake with eight Cup titles. (More info.)
