1901 — Pitcher Cy Young recorded the 300th victory of his career. (More info.)

1921 — New York Yankees’ outfielder Babe Ruth hit his 137th career home run to break the major league record held by Roger Connor. (More info.)

1930 — In the middle of a Grand Slam season, golfer Bobby Jones became the first man to break par over the four rounds of the U.S. Open, winning the title at Interlachen Country Club in Hopkins, Minn. (More info.)

1949 — Baseball owners agreed to add warning tracks in front of outfield fences. (More info.)

1951 — New York Yankees’ pitcher Allie Reynolds no-hit the Cleveland Indians, and their ace Bob Feller, 1-0, at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland. (More info.)

1979 — The Chicago White Sox held “Disco Demolition Night” at Comiskey Park, as fans were allowed to destroy disco records on the field between games of a doubleheader with Detroit. When the fans refused to return to their seats after the promotion, the second game was forfeited to the Tigers. (More info.)

1994 — The National League beat the American League, 8-7 in 10 innings, at the MLB All-Star Game at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. (More info.)

1996 — Future Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett retired from the Minnesota Twins at age 35 because of a damaged retina in his right eye. (More info.)

1998 — France defeated Brazil, 3-0, to win soccer’s World Cup in Paris. (More info.)
