1914 — The Boston Red Sox purchased Babe Ruth from Jack Dunn of the minor league Baltimore Orioles. (More info.)

1926 — Golfer Bobby Jones came from three strokes behind to win the U.S. Open at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. (More info.)

1934 — In the second MLB All-Star Game, pitcher Carl Hubbell of the New York Giants struck out five future Hall of Famers in a row: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin. The American League still won the game, 9-7, at the Polo Grounds in New York. (More info.)

1936 — Philadelphia Phillies’ outfielder Chuck Klein hit four home runs, including the eventual game-winning blast, in his team’s 9-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. (More info.)

1962 — Los Angeles Dodgers’ shortstop Maury Wills used his speed to account for two runs as the National League beat the American League, 3-1, at D.C. Stadium in Washington, the first of two MLB All-Star Games held in 1962. (More info.)

1971 — Golfer Lee Trevino won the first of his consecutive championships at the British Open at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England. (More info.)

1971 — Four years after a terrible beaning, former Boston Red Sox slugger Tony Conigliaro announced his retirement at age 25. (More info.)

1989 — The Chicago Bulls named Phil Jackson as head coach to replace Doug Collins. (More info.)

1990 — In the third MLB All-Star Game held at Chicago’s Wrigley Field, the American League defeated the National League, 2-0, as AL pitchers yielded just two hits. (More info.)

1999 — After the teams played to a scoreless tie for 120 minutes, the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team defeated China on Brandi Chastain’s goal in the shootout round to win the World Cup at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. (More info.)
