1933 — Tennis champion Helen Wills Moody lost a match for the first time since 1926 — breaking a stretch of 158 straight victories — at the United States nationals at Forest Hills, NY. (More info.)

1939 — TV station W2XBS transmitted the first-ever telecast of a major league game: the Cincinnati Reds and the Brooklyn Dodgers from Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. (More info.)

1960 — Swimmer John Devitt of Australia was awarded the gold medal over American Lance Larson in the 100-meter freestyle final at the Summer Olympics in Rome, even though experimental electronic timers showed Larson with a faster time. (More info.)
