1915 — The Chicago White Sox obtained outfielder ‘Shoeless’ Joe Jackson from the Cleveland Indians for Robert Roth, Larry Chappell, Ed Klepfer and $31,500. (More info.)

1920 — The American Professional Football Conference (APFC), the precursor to the National Football League, was founded in Canton, Ohio. (More info.)

1938 — Extending his own record, Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees hit his 23rd, and last, grand slam against Buck Ross of the Philadelphia A’s. Alex Rodriguez has since matched Gehrig’s 23 career slams. (More info.)

1955 — Golfer Arnold Palmer won his first professional tournament, the Canadian Open, at the Weston Club in Toronto. (More info.)

1957 — Bob Keegan of the Chicago White Sox no-hit the Washington Senators, 6-0, at Comiskey Park in Chicago. (More info.)

1958 — Dale Long of the Chicago Cubs became the first left-handed major league catcher in 56 years. (More info.)

1964 — Player Phil Linz and manager Yogi Berra of the New York Yankees fought each other on the team bus after Linz played a harmonica after the team’s fourth straight loss. (More info.)

1989 — Howard Johnson of the New York Mets joined Bobby Bonds and Willie Mays as the only players to hit 30 home runs and steal 30 bases in a season multiple times. (More info.)

1990 — George Steinbrenner stepped down as the managing partner of the New York Yankees. (More info.)

2000 — Tiger Woods beat Bob May in a three-hole playoff at the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville for his third straight major tournament victory. (More info.)
