1958 — Floyd Patterson scored a technical knockout of Roy Harris in the 13th round of their fight at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles to retain the heavyweight boxing title. (More info.)

1960 — Lew Burdette of the Milwaukee Braves no-hit the Philadelphia Phillies, 1-0, at County Stadium in Milwaukee. (More info.)

1967 — Slugger Tony Conigliaro of the Boston Red Sox was beaned by Jack Hamilton of the California Angels. Conigliaro’s career suffered a severe downward trajectory after the beaning. (More info.)

1973 — Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves recorded his 1,378th extra-base hit to surpass Stan Musial’s all-time major league record. (More info.)

1980 — George Brett of the Kansas City Royals had four hits to raise his seasonal batting average to .401. (More info.)

1986 — USFL quarterback Jim Kelly signed a five-year, $75 million contract with the Buffalo Bills. (More info.)

1989 — New York Yankees’ owner George Steinbrenner made his 17th managerial change since 1973 when he fired team manager Dallas Green and replaced him with Bucky Dent. (More info.)

1992 — Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics, 35, announced his retirement because of back trouble. (More info.)

1993 — Bowler Walter Ray Williams Jr. rolled four perfect games in the Greater Harrisburg (Pa.) Open, tying the Professional Bowlers’ Association record. (More info.)
