1948 — Golfer Babe Didrikson Zaharias won the US Women’s Open title at the Atlantic City Country Club in Northfield, N.J. (More info.)

1950 — Ezzard Charles scored a technical knock out of Freddie Beshore in the 14th round of their fight in Buffalo, NY to retain the heavyweight boxing title. (More info.)

1975 — Manager Earl Weaver of the Baltimore Orioles was ejected from both games of a doubleheader by umpire Ron Luciano. (More info.)

1989 — In his second start since returning from bone cancer treatment on his throwing arm, Dave Dravecky of the San Francisco Giants suffered a broken arm while pitching to Tim Raines in Montreal. (More info.)

1990 — Terry Mulholland of the Philadelphia Phillies pitched the record eighth no-hitter of the MLB season, beating the San Francisco Giants, 6-0, at Veterans Stadium (More info.)

1990 — Mark McGwire of the Oakland A’s hit a game-winning grand slam to become the first MLB player to hit 30 home runs in each of his first four seasons. (More info.)

1993 — Paul Azinger defeated Greg Norman in a sudden-death playoff to win the P.G.A. Championship at the Inverness Club in Ohio. (More info.)
