1906 — Pitcher Jack Taylor of the Chicago Cubs lasted just three innings against the Brooklyn Dodgers at Washington Park in Brooklyn, ending his consecutive complete games streak at 187. (More info.)

1919 — Willie Knapp rode Upset to a victory over Man o’ War — his only lifetime defeat — at the Sanford Memorial in Saratoga, NY. (More info.)

1948 — Satchel Paige, 42, of the Cleveland Indians pitched his first major league complete game, 5-0 at Comiskey Park in Chicago. (More info.)

1989 — Payne Stewart won the PGA Championship at Kemper Lake Golf Course in Hawthorne Woods, Ill. (More info.)

1997 — The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Oakland A’s‚ 8-0, in a game played without a public address announcer. The Orioles shut off the microphone in tribute to their longtime public address announcer Rex Barney‚ who was found dead in his home earlier in the day. (More info.)

1999 — A winner of 22 Grand Slam singles titles, Steffi Graf retired from tennis at age 30. (More info.)
