1889 – The Eiffel Tower is dedicated and officially opened to the public during the Universal Exposition in Paris (More info)

1937 – The Hindenburg, a German airship, explodes while trying to dock in New Jersey, killing 36 people (More info)

1954 – British athlete Roger Bannister becomes the first person to run a mile in less than four minutes (More info)

1989 – Cedar Point opens the first roller coaster to break the 200 foot height barrier and launches the “coaster wars” (More info)

2001 – Pope John Paul II becomes the first pope to enter a mosque during a trip to Syria (More info)
