Lots of Americans eat well and exercise to ward off diseases like hypertension and cancer -- but how's your driving? Car crashes are among the leading causes of death in the US, and where you live could affect how much danger you're in.

The CDC reports that in 2009, there were more than 34,000 American auto fatalities, and a fifth of them were young people between the ages of 15 and 24 -- making car crashes the number one cause of death in that age group.

To determine the safest and most dangerous cities in which to drive, researchers compared rates of motor vehicle crash deaths across cities and the 50 most densely populated metropolitan areas in the US.
