Ryan Succop’s 30-yard field goal in overtime lifted the Kansas City Chiefs over the San Diego Chargers 23-20 on ‘Monday Night Football.’ The kick, Succop’s third field goal of the game, gave Kansas City (4-3) the win in a mistake-filled contest that saw the teams combine for eight turnovers – four each – and commit 21 penalties for 158 total yards.

San Diego (4-3) was in position for a game-winning field goal, when quarterback Philip Rivers fumbled at the Kansas City 15-yard line with 48 seconds left to play in regulation. The Chiefs’ Andy Studebaker recovered the ball, but Kansas City quarterback Matt Cassel was intercepted by Eric Weddle, his second pick-off of the game, on the ensuing drive.

San Diego tied the game at 20 midway through the fourth quarter on a two-point conversion pass from Rivers to Curtis Brinkley. Brinkley’s 2-yard touchdown run on the previous play pulled the Chargers to within 20-18. Prior to the Brinkley score, the Chargers had managed only four Nick Novak field goals in the game.

Rivers completed 26 of 41 passes for 369 yards for San Diego, but he was intercepted twice in the first half, as Kansas City sprinted to a 13-3 lead at intermission. The Chiefs were ahead 13-12, when Jackie Battle’s 1-yard touchdown run gave them a 20-12 advantage early in the fourth quarter. Battle led all rushers with 70 yards.

Kansas City’s Cassel threw for 261 yards and a touchdown, but he was picked off twice and fumbled once. He was also sacked three times. Kansas City’s Jonathan Baldwin had five receptions for 82 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter.

Malcolm Floyd had five catches for 107 yards for San Diego. Running back Ryan Mathews had 112 combined yards from scrimmage for the Chargers.
