A new report by the Institute of Medicine says that contraception, sterilization, annual HIV testing and breastfeeding support should be fully covered by health insurance plans under the health care reform law.

“The eight services we identified are necessary to support women’s optimal health and well-being.  Each recommendation stands on a foundation of evidence supporting its effectiveness,” said Linda Rosenstock, committee chair.

The study, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, quoted a study that found the direct medical cost of unintended pregnancy was estimated to be nearly $5 billion in 2002. The cost savings due to contraceptive use in that same year was estimated to be $19.3 billion.

It is unclear whether the Department of Health and Human Services will implement the Institute of Medicine’s findings. A decision could come as early as August, CNN reported.
