You Won’t Believe How Many People Pee in Pools

Summer is a time when many people take to swimming pools, both public and private. But before you put on your suit and dive in, this might give you pause: a new survey found one in five adults admit that at some point, they’ve peed in a pool.

The Water Quality & Health Council recently polled 1,000 adults and found that not only are some using pools as toilets, almost 68 percent also said they don’t shower before getting in a pool — even though nearly all respondents said they’d never use someone else’s bathwater.

“Swimming is not a substitute for bathing. Too many people unknowingly treat the pool as a communal bathtub,” said Dr. Chris Wiant, chair of the Water Quality & Health Council. “It may seem counter-intuitive, but it’s important to shower before you jump in the pool to help keep swimming healthy for everyone in the pool.”

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not an excess of chlorine that can make your eyes red and irritated after swimming — it’s the mixture of sweat, cosmetics and urine combined with the chlorine.

That pool suddenly doesn’t seem so inviting, does it?
