The NCAA announced Monday that it would move its future championship events out of New Jersey after the state adopted new rules to allow gambling on sporting events.

The move will impact these events scheduled for next year:

  • a Division I women’s basketball regional in Trenton
  • the Division I men’s and women’s diving championship regionals in Piscataway
  • the Division III men’s volleyball championship in Hoboken
  • the Division III wrestling championship regional in Ewing
  • the Division II and III women’s lacrosse championships in Montclair

The move comes in response to new regulations issued by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement that will begin to allow sports wagering at New Jersey racetracks and Atlantic City casinos. NCAA policy prohibits holding championship events in states that allow single-game betting. In August, the NCAA joined with the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB to file a federal lawsuit aimed at stopping the proposed regulations. That suit is still ongoing.

The NCAA has said that it will work with the schools and conferences that had been scheduled to host the events and hopes to find suitable replacement venues in surrounding states.
