‘Yeah, Baby!’ Mike Myers Might Turn ‘Austin Powers’ Into a Shagadelic Broadway Musical
It seems like tons of hit movies from the pre-2000’s wind up with musical adaptions on Broadway, and now it seems ‘Austin Powers’ is next on the list. Following in the footsteps of ‘Legally Blonde,’ ‘Footloose,’ ‘Rocky’ and ‘Sister Act,’ Mike Myers is reportedly in talks to turn his popular movie into a Broadway musical.
While Myers, who played four different roles in the ’60s spy spoof series, wouldn’t star in the production, he’s reportedly “heavily involved” in writing it. Since he’s also currently penning a fourth ‘Austin Powers’ movie, slated to arrive in theaters in the next couple of years, this means 2012 will prove to be a busy one for the former ‘Saturday Night Live’ star.
The most recent film in the franchise, ‘Austin Powers in Goldmember,’ was released in 2002. All told, the three movies have grossed some $676 million worldwide. However, considering the no-where-near success of previous musical adaptations (case in point: ‘Legally Blonde’), will an ‘Austin Powers’ show match up to the hype?
