Mariano Rivera Gets 602nd Save to Become All-Time Leader

Mariano Rivera notched his 602nd career save on Monday afternoon, passing Trevor Hoffman for first place on the all-time list.

Rivera preserved a 6-4 victory for the New York Yankees over the Minnesota Twins.

Since taking over as the Yankees’ closer in 1997, Rivera has dominated opposing batters late in games. Monday was no exception, as he set down Trevor Plouffe, Michael Cuddyer and Chris Parmelee to close out the game, striking out Parmelee for the final out.

Rivera notched the save during New York’s last homestand of the season. His hometown fans gave him a standing ovation when he entered the game in the 9th, and remained on their feet for the entire inning.
