The Kansas City Chiefs fired Todd Haley on Monday, a day after the team fell to 5-8 in a disappointing season highlighted by injuries to top quarterback Matt Cassel and star running back Jamaal Charles.

Haley led to Chiefs to a 19-27 record during his nearly three seasons in charge, including a 10-6 record and AFC West division win last year. Kansas City lost to Baltimore in the wild card round of the playoffs.

“Todd helped this team in many valuable ways over the past three seasons, and I am thankful for his contributions,” Chiefs’ GM Scott Pioli said in a statement. “Unfortunately, we have not been able to establish the kind of consistency we need to continue to build a strong foundation for the future and we believe a change is important at this time.”

Defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel will take over as interim coach for the team’s last three games. Crennel was 24-40 over four years as the Cleveland Browns’ head coach from 2005-2008.
