How Happy Are Americans?

Americans might not be as miserable as you think.

In fact, according to the latest Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, we are the happiest we’ve been since 2008.

The “well-being index” is based on research that was conducted between March of 2008 and May 2010. The results are comprised of nearly 30,000 interviews, which were conducted each month during the study period.

In the interviews, the participants were asked to answer a series of questions regarding their emotional well-being compared to the previous day. Questions included whether or not they experienced worry, enjoyment or stress; whether they smiled or laughed; whether they were angry or not; and whether they were diagnosed with depression.

Researchers found that America’s overall emotional health seems to improve at the same time in which they experience a higher standard of living, as well as more confidence in their economic situation.

The study’s nadir came in December 2008 when Americans registered their lowest well-being score on record.
