ESPN commentator and former Notre Dame coach Bob Davie has been named the new head coach at the University of New Mexico. Davie was 35-25 in five years at Notre Dame, but hasn’t coached since 2001.

Davie replaces Mike Locksley, who was fired last September after a 2-26 record and a string of off-field incidents sent the Lobos program into a tailspin. Football ticket sales had dropped by over a third at the time of his firing. New Mexico is currently 1-9 and just got its first win of the season last weekend, 21-14, over UNLV.

Davie coached the Fighting Irish from 1997-2001, a span in which he had two losing seasons and never won a bowl game (0-3). He was fired in December 2001 and has spent the last several years providing color commentary for ESPN football broadcasts. Prior to his head coaching job, Davie served as defensive coordinator at Notre Dame, Texas A&M and Tulane.
