South Africa’s athletics federation announced that it has chosen Oscar Pistorius, a double-amputee runner, to join this month’s world championships in Daegu, South Korea, AP reports. For Pistorius, 24, it’s a dream come true, since he’ll get the opportunity to race against able-bodied athletes.

Pistorius becomes the first amputee athlete at the worlds and will compete in the 400 meters event, and participate in the 4×400 relay.

The runner uses Cheetah Flex-Foot prostheses, which had previously been ruled an unfair edge over able-bodied athletes. But that decision was overturned.

If all goes well, Pistorius could also be selected for next year’s London Olympics.
