Dogs and cats may be in a perpetual cycle of conflict, but when it comes to who the public loves more, dogs take home the win. According to a survey by Harris Interactive, 69 percent of all pet owners have a dog, trumping the 51 percent who have a cat.

Fish (11 percent) and birds (7 percent) were the only other pets to garner a significant percentage of ownership. These figures are more or less unchanged since 2007, which was the last time Harris Interactive polled the topic.

The 2011 survey also uncovered the “cat lady” stereotype holds true, and cat owners are far more likely to have more than one cat than dog owners are to have more than one dog. Just one other reason to choose a pup over a kitten — people won’t think you’re crazy.
