The Los Angeles Dodgers have hired Sue Falsone as their new head physical therapist and athletic trainer, making Falsone the first woman to serve as the head athletic trainer for a team in any of the four major professional sports leagues.

“This is a very special day not just for Sue, but for the Dodgers and Major League Baseball,” Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said. “The Dodgers have always been an organization of firsts and this promotion for Sue continues in that tradition.”

“I’ve worked with males the last decade, and that’s all I know,” said Sue Falsone. In a statement, however, she said the change isn’t really about her being a woman. “It’s us as a medical staff and dealing with injures — that’s what the change is going to be. We’ll look at things differently. We’ll have different principles of injury management and hopefully decrease the injury rate. That’s what’s exciting.”

Falsone has worked for years with baseball players from around the league — including Curt Schilling following his anjle surgery in 2004 — who sought treatment at her facility.

“If the person treating me gets me healthy and back on the field, it doesn’t matter what their gender, race or anything else is. It’s all about results,” Schilling said.
