California Town Lights Up Controversy by Banning Smoking in Homes [POLL]

San Rafael, California isn’t blowing smoke – it has prohibited people from smoking in their own homes.

More specifically, anyone who lives in a residence that shares a wall with another home can’t smoke. That means people shacking up in an apartment, condo, co-op or any type of multi-family unit with at least three residences are banned from smoking on the premises.

A town official said it may be the strictest non-smoking policy in the country:

I’m not aware of any ordinance that’s stronger….It doesn’t matter if it’s owner-occupied or renter-occupied. We didn’t want to discriminate. The distinguishing feature is the shared wall.”

The official also said no one really opposed the new law.

This is the latest instance of local government cracking down on tobacco. New York City made headlines by raising the legal age to buy tobacco to 21.
