Week 5 of the 2013 NFL season brought a few upsets and plenty of exciting games. Here’s what we learned in the fifth week of the 2013 regular season:

Matt Schaub Could Be Colorblind

Texans quarterback Matt Schaub had a record-breaking performance on Sunday Night Football. Unfortunately, it was a record no quarterback wants to hold. The embattled Schaub threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown for the fourth game in a row – a new NFL record. Schaub had held the record with NFL greats Peyton Manning and John Elway, but now he has the infamous mark all to himself after San Francisco’s Tramaine Brock took one of his passes into the end zone early in the first quarter of the 49ers 34-3 win over Houston. Did Schaub suffer a recent onset of colorblindness? No, but he did get benched after throwing two additional interceptions, as San Francisco (3-2) drilled Houston (2-3).

It’s Hard To Stay Undefeated on the Road

All five NFL teams who entered Sunday’s games with unbeaten records were on the road. Denver, Kansas City and New Orleans were able to stay undefeated, but Seattle (4-1) lost 34-28 to Indianapolis (4-1) and New England (4-1) lost 13-6 to Cincinnati (3-2). The Broncos, Chiefs and Saints certainly didn’t breeze through their opponents either. Home field advantage is sometimes given too much credit — after all, NFL players can be temporary visitors to their own cities for football season — but the good teams struggled on the road more than usual on Sunday.

Mother Nature Didn’t Care About Tom Brady’s TD Streak

Coming into Sunday, New England’s Tom Brady had thrown a touchdown pass in 52 consecutive games. The Patriots (4-1) would have loved it if Brady had extended the streak in the fourth quarter, especially since it would have kept them from losing to Cincinnati (3-2) by a 13-6 score. Unfortunately, Mother Nature didn’t feel the same way. She dumped heavy rainfall on Paul Brown Stadium just long enough to make visibility and gripping the football impossible. Strange — given Brady’s good looks and his well-spoken demeanor, we’d have assumed that all mothers would love him.

A QB Can Outplay Peyton Manning…and Still Lose

Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo threw for 506 yards and five touchdowns against the Broncos (5-0), but Dallas (2-3) still lost the game. Romo’s totals bested Peyton Manning’s 414 yards and four touchdowns, but the Cowboys’ QB threw an interception with 1:57 to play that set up Matt Prater’s game-winning, 28-yard field goal. Prater’s boot gave Denver a 51-48 win and gave Cowboys’ fans heartburn. The Broncos’ defense is clearly the team’s weak link, but even when they give up nearly 50 points, Manning can get the victory.

The Saints Aren’t Overrated

On their way to a flawless start, New Orleans (5-0) has defeated suspect teams such as Arizona and Tampa Bay, making some experts wonder if a favorable schedule was helping inflate the Saints record. After beating division-leaders Miami (3-2) and Chicago (3-2) in seven days, Drew Brees and Co. have proven that they are worthy of being mentioned among the biggest stories of the NFL season. Making NFL news isn’t new for the Saints, but at least they are hurting the other teams legally this year.
